Fireplace Insert Installation in Santa Barbara, CA

What actually goes into fitting an insert into an existing fireplace
Will the insert just slide into the old firebox? Rarely. The firebox is only the opening. The real work is above it. A wood or pellet insert needs a continuous stainless liner running from the insert collar to the top of the stack. Not a stub into the smoke chamber. Open masonry fireplaces with brick or clay-tile flues usually need the damper plate cut or removed first, and the liner may have to be ovalized to pass the throat.
We measure four things before ordering anything: firebox height, width at the front, width at the back, and depth. Raised-hearth postwar brick fireboxes in Santa Barbara are often shallower than buyers expect. Hearth extension depth matters too, and it is set by the insert's listing, not by preference.
Factory-built prefab metal fireboxes in framed chases are a separate category. Only inserts specifically listed for that chase model can go in. Swapping brands voids the listing.
Coastal air shortens cap and liner life, so we talk through stainless grade with you. Direct-vent and sealed gas inserts don't use the old flue at all. They need their own coaxial run, a gas line, and a receptacle for the blower.

What happens when you call us
Call and tell us what the chimney is doing, a draft that backs smoke in, a smell after rain, a gas insert that clicks and never lights. We book a one hour arrival window and the estimate costs you nothing.
We look at the firebox, flue and cap, and give you a firm number before any tool comes off the truck. Flue length, creosote, cap condition and fuel type move that price.
You approve the number, then we sweep, swap parts, relight and test the unit, and run the fire to confirm the draft pulls. Drop cloths go down first and the dust leaves with us.
